Introduction

Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries are experiencing an aging population, leading to a surge in older adults seeking care at Emergency Departments (EDs). Consequently, it is essential to implement policies and protocols to ensure that all ED staff are equipped to safely manage this increase in older patients, often referred to as the 'silver wave'. A workshop focusing on the management of older persons in the ED before their disposition would be advantageous, fostering a holistic clinical approach tailored to this unique population.

Objectives

  • Physiology of older adults
  • Recognizing frailty and its complications
  • To manage and prevent fall
  • To optimize pain management
  • Approach to syncope
  • Steps to recognize sepsis (case discussion)
  • Identifying and reducing polypharmacy (case discussion)
  • Screening for cognitive impairment/delirium
  • Direction of therapy for the critically ill
  • Improving end of life care management in the ED
